This is how a solar power system works
Are you interested in covering your motorhome or camper's electricity needs with a solar power system in the future? Then you've come to the right place. Our simple guide will lead you step by step to the optimal solar power system, perfectly tailored to your individual electricity consumption.

For a solar system for your motorhome or campervan you will need…
- one or more solar modules (e.g. S-series) for power generation,
- ABS mounting spoiler in an attractive white for secure mounting of the solar module,
- a special adhesive set for bonding the ABS mounting spoiler to securely connect it to the vehicle roof,
- Roof feedthrough (part no. DD1, in white) for watertight and permanent routing of the cable from the solar module to the charge controller,
- Solar charge controller with LED display for monitoring the solar system or battery and for protecting the battery from overcharging and backflow.
- UV-resistant solar cable for connecting the solar panel to the charge controller and the battery
You will also need a battery and, if necessary, a 230V household current inverter if these are not already on board. You can purchase the components individually or as a complete SOLARA set.
Expert webinar with SOLARA
For ambitious travel with your motorhome, campervan, or off-road vehicle, and for a degree of independence from campsites and pitches, a solar system is ideal. Solar panels are especially valuable if you want to stay off-grid for as long as possible in a beautiful spot far from an electrical hookup.
This extensive topic was covered in an expert webinar by SOLARA on October 09, 2023. The recorded webinar is available below and can be viewed here . Important questions were also answered at the end. Have a look!
Two steps to a complete SOLARA solar power system for your motorhome or campervan
Step 1: Determining your individual daily requirements
To determine the appropriate size solar system for your motorhome, campervan, van, caravan, etc., you need to take a closer look at your appliances and their energy requirements. These depend on the number of appliances, their power consumption, and their daily operating time. Additionally, the number of occupants and the season in which the vehicle is used also influence energy consumption.
Simply add up the energy consumption of your motorhome, campervan, van, caravan, etc. according to the table below – the result is your daily energy requirement (Wh/d, watt-hours per day). Depending on your consumption habits and the amount of time you use the vehicle throughout the year, this consumption should then be covered more or less by the solar system.
| Gerät | Rated capacity | Operating hours/day | Consumption/day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Radio | 15 watts | 4h | 60 Wh/d |
| Color TV | 40 watts | 3h | 120 Wh/d |
| SAT receiver | 40 watts | 3h | 120 Wh/d |
| Lamps | 10 watts | 5h | 50 Wh/d |
| compressor fridge | 50 watts | 6h | 300 Wh/d |
| Smartphone | 5 watts | 2h | 10 Wh/d |
| Tablet PC | 10 watts | 2h | 20 Wh/d |
The result could be, for example, 650 Wh/d. In that case, you would need a 160 Wp (watt peak = maximum power) solar module during the summer months. We recommend a complete SOLARA set with top-of-the-line solar modules, including optimally matched, high-quality charge controllers and mounting systems developed in-house with TÜV-certified safety.
Below you will find our complete SOLARA sets, specifically designed for motorhomes. We have designed them to meet a wide range of energy requirements. Therefore, they are available in different versions and power outputs.
When selecting a complete set or solar panel for your vehicle, please consider when and how often you will be using it. If in doubt, it's best to choose the next higher power class than your estimated needs, or add another panel. This will provide greater energy security and allow for faster charging.
Step 2: Selecting the SOLARA complete set for your individual daily needs
Based on the calculated electricity requirement, select one of the following complete solar sets.
All Solara complete sets consist of high-quality SOLARA solar modules – Made in Germany, matching charge controller, mounting spoiler system with adhesive set for easy installation on the roof of the motorhome or camper, as well as solar cable and easy-to-understand assembly instructions.
