A large number of products and devices require an independent power supply. Either there is no power connection available, or connecting to the grid is too expensive and complicated. Furthermore, over two billion people worldwide currently lack access to a reliable energy supply.

However, many devices simply don't function without electricity. Measuring points, measuring systems, and many other measuring technologies often rely on a dependable power supply. SOLARA solar modules and complete stand-alone systems, also known as off-grid or island systems, produce the necessary electricity in an environmentally friendly way, without emissions. SOLARA offers high-quality and affordable solutions for reliable solar electrification, including for testing equipment and much more. For locations without a suitable power connection or in remote regions, we provide self-sufficient solar power solutions.

Many important applications – safely and reliably powered by solar energy!

Measurement technology powered by solar energy

Earthquake monitoring – SOLARA solar technology for an earthquake monitoring station

This earthquake monitoring station is equipped with ten SOLARA 120-watt solar modules, manufactured in northern Germany, and uses solar power to transmit its data to a seismic monitoring network. The station is located in Hvassahraun in the Reykjanes region. Reykjavík is approximately 23 km from the earthquake monitoring station in Hvassahraun.

The earthquake monitoring station with its solar power system is connected to the GEOFON network of the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which is operated jointly with more than 50 international partners. Within the GEOFON network, high-quality broadband data for earthquake detection and monitoring is acquired, among other things, through electricity generation by photovoltaic systems. The earthquake information service is one of the fastest sources of earthquake information worldwide. Even the most remote seismic measurement stations are connected to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), partly via solar power systems from SOLARA.

SOLARA equipped buoys for earthquake monitoring and tsunami warning in the Indian Ocean with reliable solar systems and solar modules from Germany 15 years ago.

Stations powered by solar energy, i.e., electricity from photovoltaic solar cells, exist on every continent. The earthquake monitoring network is particularly dense in the European-Mediterranean region and around the Indian Ocean. Broadband sensors, mostly STS-2, are standard equipment in these stations. They cover the entire seismic spectrum, from small, high-frequency local earthquakes to global earthquakes.

Important earthquake parameters, such as information about the epicenter, are recorded. The epicenter is located around the focus of the earthquake, i.e., the place where the earthquake occurred. Further data, such as the depth and magnitude of the earthquake, are also determined, as well as the time of the event in UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). This creates a large seismological data archive.

Solar technology is used for measuring and testing

Measurement technology is important in every respect and is now primarily digital. Therefore, a reliable power supply is essential. A solar power system is the perfect solution for independent power supply.

Routine measurements, often powered by solar energy, are required for environmental monitoring of air, noise, and water quality. Solar power systems ensure the continuous monitoring of these measurements. Their independent power supply enables measures to secure and improve these resources. Solar-powered measuring devices for air emissions and immissions are used in a special procedure to ensure compliance with and monitoring of air pollution control regulations. These solar measurements can detect air pollutants at their source (emissions) and at their points of impact (immissions), as the solar modules provide a reliable and independent power supply at any location.

Solar measuring devices, measuring points and measuring techniques for emission and immission measurements

Equip emission measuring devices with solar power to detect noise, particulate matter, and hazards on-site. With professional solar systems from SOLARA, measuring devices can reliably record and store all data.

Harmful pollutants, noise, particulate matter, and harmful radiation must be prevented at all costs. For this reason, emission limits must be observed. However, this can only be measured on-site. Solar modules provide the necessary power for this purpose, even when no direct power connection is available. This also applies to gas leaks, light sources, and suspended particles. Inaccurate measurements due to distant measuring points or an unreliable power supply can be disastrous. Only with solar energy can you be certain and ensure you have access to the latest data to generate professional results.

Solar measuring devices in production

Appropriate measurement technology is absolutely essential for determining various physical quantities. In automation, measurement technology is indispensable today. In production processes, measurement and test data are necessary for product quality. Sophisticated measurement technology therefore has a far-reaching impact.

To achieve this, modern measurement technology must function reliably at all times. Therefore, it makes perfect sense to use self-sufficient solar systems to ensure consistently reliable measurements.

The measurement technology, currently powered by solar energy, is used for the following processes:

Production process, product quality in a manufacturing facility during incoming inspection, intermediate inspection and outgoing inspection.

The testing equipment powered by a solar system includes material testing, dimensional testing and functional testing.

In the measurement technology used with solar modules for materials testing, the focus is on material quality testing within quality assurance. A distinction is made between destructive and non-destructive materials testing. In destructive materials testing, a sample is examined for properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, flexural strength, hardness, toughness, and chemical composition.

For measurement technology with solar power supply in plastics processing, electrical conductivity also plays a role.

Professional measurements requiring fast, precise, and galvanically isolated data acquisition, as well as intelligent pre-processing and monitoring, are often location-independent. Such smart data and industrial analytics, or measurement technology as an interface to the virtual world, can ideally be powered safely and reliably by solar cells or small solar power systems.

Unlike the imprecise, manual, and cumbersome methods of the past, solar-powered measurement technology is now compact, absolutely precise, and offers fast measurement and easy maintenance. Independent and automated data transfers to a central IT system are possible at any time via the solar array. A connection to a high-performance IT network is fundamental to modern measurement technology. Centralized acquisition, management, and processing of measured values are indispensable today. A high-performance solar array and highly efficient solar cells ensure such quality concepts.
